It's That Time Of Year

Eggnog flavored gumballs! For when drinking eggnog is not a possibility, you can chew it for a while. I am of course assuming these don't have alcohol. ...I'm pretty sure they don't.

Blagh. My energy seems to deplete with every day that gets closer to Christmas. I suspect it's because even though I don't actually participate in the chaos that surrounds the holiday season, I find just hearing about it is exhausting. "What's that? Oh my God! You had to wait 30 minutes for a parking spot at the mall? Oh, that makes my eyelids droop - let me lie down for a minute." I guess what I'm getting at is that posting might be a little spotty between now and New Years. It's that time of year when we bloggers are granted permission to slack for more than two days without too many repercussions, but I promise to be back with regularly scheduled Monday through Friday postings on January 2nd. Until then, I hope you all have a wonderful holiday ahead of you. Be safe, stay sane, and eat your veggies!

Enjoy this short list of entertaining goodies!

Living Walls and Sustainable Floral Wedding Decor

In normal circumstances, I would not be pleased if things were growing out of my wall, but these "living walls" are pretty cool and are sparking a whole new style of home decor. Austin based studio, Articulture Designs, provides sustainable landscape and interior botanical design that blends the practical with the exotic.

Fortunately, this outfit also offers wedding and event design. Succulents, moss, twigs, and driftwood give birth to a beautiful array of imaginative and creative centerpieces!

Healthy Monday: Environmentally Friendly Lights and Candles

Maybe it's because winter is (usually) cold, the nights are long, and the weather can be icky, but there is something about the holidays that begs for candlelit mantles and dinner tables. The ambiance they provide invites you into a world of cozy comfortableness. But while those "peppermint cookie" and "pumpkin pie" candles may be tempting (not to eat silly), make sure to pay attention to what they are made of. Paraffin candles, which is a petroleum byproduct, have been linked to health problems according to the American Chemical Society and to a decrease in indoor air quality.

There are eco-friendly solutions though. Pure beeswax candles are the least polluting choice. They usually last longer than paraffin candles and they smoke less too. Above: Beehive Candles. Note: If you prefer scented candles, Planet Green advises choosing ones with pure essential oils rather than synthetic fragrances.

Another favorite is the soy candle, made from soybeans (a renewable resource) and burns less soot than paraffin candles. They have a lower melting point also lending to a longer burning time. Above: Covington Creek Candle Company

Although a bit un-traditional, LED candles are a great eco-alternative. They may not produce any heat, but they have the benefit of being reusable year after year. Above: Smart Candle

Tons of Eco-Wedding Inspiration!

If you haven't checked it out already, the new Eco-Beautiful Wedding Zine is quite the site to see. Amazing images, beautiful inspiration, great articles - and it's all virtual. This means two things: One, no paper equals eco-friendly. And two, you can sneak peaks at it while you're supposed to be filling out that spread sheet, writing that paper, finalizing expense sheets, or just trying to look like you're working in general. :)

Oh, and of course, we are super thrilled to have Earthly Affair featured on page. 50!

Using River Rocks and Stones in Your Wedding

Bella Dia (a crafty little blog featuring loads of delightful DIY projects) recently featured these adorable design-y rocks as a "last minute gift idea". Using Bella Dia's idea, you can transform a plain old rock into a little work of art with a simple scrapbook transfer. However, river rocks and stones are also popular wedding decor items. They can be scattered around soy pillar candles, they can line the aisle, or even used as seating cards...er, seating rocks?

Custom Wedding Dress by Leanimal

Couldn't help but share this marvelous, custom dress by Leanimal, a previous Project Runway contestant. Unfortunately, she states on her blog that this dress most likely drained her of any motivation to create another custom wedding dress, but the attention to detail is really quite incredible! What do you think? Would you wear something like this? See original post here.

Making Something New Again: Vintage Goodies to Re-Purpose

Saw this lovely post on Freshly Blended about vintage vessels and it led me to the delightful Etsy Shop, Sweetshorn. Vintage carafes, mugs, cookware and all sorts of goodies can be found by perusing this site! But what I love most about this shop is that it presents the opportunity to re-purpose something vintage (or simply previously used) into a new and interesting piece of decor or artwork. For instance, the mugs shown below could be used as floral vases in your wedding, while the little bowls at the bottom could hold tea lights. And afterwards, the life of these items could only continue to give back. Get creative and enjoy the eco-friendly aspect of re-using and re-purposing!

Shoes That Work YOU out?

Is it ever too late to start a fitness routine? When the weather is cold and my hands feel like icicles, I am inclined to believe it's not too late, it's just too late to start now. Just as the temperature goes down, so does my motivation, and I find it much easier to simply say, "Next month! Next month I'll work out." So I was intrigued when I received a press release from Earth Shoes about their footwear with "toning, strengthening, and calorie burning attributes." Simply put, you wear the shoes, go about your day, and you'll burn more calories than if you were wearing regular shoes. I have to admit, it sounds a little fishy, but they apparently have the research to back it up. And they've got this 70% recycled biofoam cushioning in every shoe, which molds to your foot and provides "exceptional comfort."

Personally, I think their boots are pretty cute! I can't really vouch for it, but I am willing to bet they really are comfortable.

So shoes that work out for you...sorta. Now all I need is an office chair that exercises my butt, works out my arms, and lifts my boobs. hehe! Have a great weekend everyone!

I am loving the simplicity of this wedding decor. Sometimes being eco-friendly really just means taking advantage of the less is more mantra! Photography by Scott Andrew. See more here.

Holiday Season Etiquette: Making the Most of Attending a Dinner Party

I think it's safe to say we are smack dab in the thick of the holiday season. The malls are decorated, the holidays cards are arriving, and hopefully FedEx won't lose another one of my packages (to their credit, they were very helpful after a little nagging). And just as with wedding season, dinner parties are par for the course when a festive occasion approaches. Personally, I love dinner parties, but when you're not in charge of the menu, you're sometimes forced to graciously accept a mound of questionable looking mystery meat, which your host has dubbed "meat loaf." (You laugh, but once my mom made meat loaf that looked like - okay, maybe a little like dog food - and it was surprisingly very tasty.) So whether it's navigating the dinner table's epicurean selections or learning how to make conversation with a very reserved seat neighbor, I thought I'd share a few random tips for making the most of being a dinner party attendee.

- Don't shy away from the red wine, but don't drink it from the bottle if you know what I mean. Studies have shown that red wine is a rich source of antioxidants and that it can protect against heart disease, but don't forget it's still alcohol, which is not really that great for you and can leave you dancing on the table if you're not careful.

- Bring your host a gift. It doesn't have to be fancy. It doesn't have to cost a lot. It doesn't have to match your outfit, it just needs to show your appreciation. Wine or flowers are pretty acceptable.

- Traditionally, it's the job of the host(s) to keep the conversation flowing, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be armed with charming convo skills. Unless you already know your dinner mates well, steer clear of politics and religion and personally, I suggest staying away from the weather as a conversation opener. (If you really want to talk politics, here's an article on keeping it diplomatic.) Some people are naturally good at talking to strangers, but if this isn't the case for you, don't be afraid to chat. Discuss movies, vacations, sports, hobbies, anything is on the table! Your biggest weapon? Most people love talking about themself, so you can usually pull even the shyest person out of the shell with a few questions.

- Last but not least, when you are offered a funky looking dish, you have three options. You can politely decline, you can be adventurous and take a bite, or you can loudly declare that you're allergic to (insert food here). But whatever the circumstance, you should never twist your mouth down, furrow your eyebrows, and look at whatever is being offered to you as if it just came out of the swamp. (You can get away with this when you're five, not when you're twenty-five.) After all, your host went through the effort to prepare this meal, be gracious enough to at least try it.

Eco-Friendly Guest Book: The Wedding Tree

I have fallen in love with this guest book idea. This would probably work best for a small wedding, but imagine having such a unique piece of art to hang around your home for years to come? Each guest places their thumb print on the tree and signs their name! Use an environmentally friendly frame and recycled paper and you've got yourself a pretty eco happy guest book.

Real Wedding: Karen and Erik's Earth Friendly Wedding

One of my favorite things to share are pictures of real weddings, sent to us by past Earthly Affair clients. I know it sounds cheesy, but each and every one of our customers is special to us and there is something so wonderful about being let into such a momentous part of their life. So I was more than excited when Karen, a recent October bride, sent us some of her wedding photographs. I remember speaking with Karen when we were working on her invites back in March and it was hard not to adore her friendly personality and positive nature.

Karen was a green bride through and through. She used local flowers and food, vintage vases, reusable bags as wedding favors, and even had her mother's old shoe clips converted into a hair accessory for her big day.

Personally, I adore those beautiful blue bridesmaid dresses!

But my favorite part of her wedding was the cake, designed to look like the Earthly Affair Juliet invitation! The same motif was used for her table numbers and menu cards.

Thank you so much, Karen for sharing your beautiful wedding with us! May you and Erik enjoy a lifetime of marital bliss!
