For The Groom - Upcycled, Eco-friendly Bow Ties

I always thought there was something kind of sexy about a bow tie. I'm not talking about tuxedo bow ties. Think patterns and polka dots. They're kind of geeky-sexy, maybe? I don't think it would look good on my man (no offense, Jeff), but it just works on some guys. What do you think? Would you encourage your groom to wear a unique bow tie to the wedding? To the rehearsal dinner?

Xoelle delights us with handmade, upcycled bow ties, created from vintage or used materials.

Friends Don't Let Friends Eat Soy Candles

Sometimes soy tastes good and sometimes it doesn't. For instance, soy beans are good. And so is soy sauce. But don't eat a soy candle. You can however admire its glow and relish in it's fragrance.

Found at Inventing Weddings, these hand poured, soy candles are available at Soychology. I am sure your vegetarian cousin/sibling/parent would enjoy one of these as a thank you gift for all the wedding help.

Invitation Sale! 50% Off!

Above you will find the newest, non-official member of the Earthly Affair family. It's the Harmony invitation and although it hasn't been added to the website yet, it's available for anyone interested. And to give it an especially warm welcome to the blog, it comes with a promotion! 50% off! So basically instead of paying $319.50 for 75 invitations and reply cards, you would only pay $159.75! (Perhaps it's because my temperamental inkjet has caused me to go a little crazy, but that's a really large discount for us, so take advantage of it now or forever hold your peace.)

However, there is a catch. I know, I know - there's always a catch, but don't worry, it's not that bad. The promotion is only applicable for the Harmony invitation and your order has to be placed and paid for by 5 p.m. (EST) this Friday, July 31st. The invitation is only available as is (this means the colors stay the same, but of course the wording and fonts can be changed.) You still get the same great, Earthly Affair invitation, printed on heavy recycled paper (white or ivory available) and created in the most environmentally friendly way possible. (It's also important to note that our studio will be closed August 14th through the 21st, so any unapproved proofs will not be resume until after we re-open on the 24th of August.)

For more information, you can visit our pricing page. Just tally up your totals and then take 50% off to get the cost. To place an order, give us a call at 404.514.7430 or visit our contact us page and let us know your desired quantities, including whether or not you would like reply and/or enclosure cards.

Make Your Own Solar Sun Jar

Solar sunjars are a really fun way to romantically light up an outdoor evening wedding. Less cheesy than LED candles and more eco-friendly than petroleum based wax candles, they're pretty widely available on the net. For $55.00 you can get one at the MoMa Store. However, for those looking to save a little and test their DIY skills, thanks to LifeHacker, you can also make your own!

Healthy Monday: What's In Your Fridge?

Do you have any of these foods in your refrigerator: meat, dairy products, canned foods, farmed fish, non-organic chicken, sodas, foods with hydrogenated oils (that's pretty much the entire snack aisle), processed meats, such as bacon, hot dogs, and sausage, and artificially colored foods, such as maraschino cherries? If you answered yes, then congratulations! You're on your way to ingesting arsenic, growth hormones, tumor inducing toxins, and nasty pesticides.

Now you're either frantically running towards your refrigerator desperate to toss these foods or scoffing at the paranoid world we live in. Either way, please know my goal is not to scare you, but rather to inform you of what you might be putting in your body. As noted in the Eco-Salon article, 13 Tips to Avoid Exposure to Toxins in Common Foods, the aisles in our grocery stores are filled to the brim with foods designed to look appetizing (and usually taste pretty good), but ultimately are laden with unhealthy chemicals. For instance, lab rats and mice exposed to artificial food coloring developed adrenal gland, brain, thyroid, and kidney tumors. Hydrogenated oils are linked to diabetes and heart disease and studies have shown farm raised fish contain over 10 times the amount of dioxin.

What's the solution? I'm not sure there is a clear cut one, but I would suggest implementing more fruits, vegetables, and legumes into your diet. If you're not a vegetarian, cut back on meat, poultry, and fish. And probably the biggest no-brainer, but the hardest of all, is to cut back on those sugary processed food and drinks, especially the ones with artificial sweeteners.

And of course, buy local whenever possible! Need to know what's in season for your area? Check out this handy interactive "peak-season map" from Epicurious.

Love to Peony::Love

I'm so excited for Peony::Love's Amanda, who recently got married on the Oregon coast. Although I don't get enough time to scour other wedding inspired blogs these days, I always enjoyed visiting hers. This gal tells it like it is and she isn't afraid to be herself, and you've got to at least be curious about a girl who had a pet rat as a teenager. She kept her wedding low key, with few vendors, thrifted milk glass vases, pink vodka lemonade, homemade cakes, and expired polaroids. Gotta love it! Head on over to East Side Bride to get a more behind the scenes look from Amanda herself. (More info and pictures can be seen at A Practical Wedding.)

Healthy Monday: You Don't Have to eat Cardboard

I used to think that the phrase, "like eating cardboard," when referring to a healthy food item was just an expression. But I recently purchased a certain nutritious cracker/bread product, which I won't name here, that literally tasted like cardboard. It was awful! How does that stuff get green lighted? My only guess is that they're a popular snack for the 70 and older crowd, which must be when your taste buds start to disentegrate.

Fortunately, there are plenty of healthy foods available to us that taste rather pleasant. Strawberries, artichokes, almonds, wheat bread - they are all quite good for you in moderation. But what about something that satisfies our sweet tooths a little more? Did you know there are benefits to eating dark chocolate? Who knew that sneaky, cavity inducing culprit was really a good natured, health food when enjoyed in moderation? Okay, maybe labeling it a "health food" is a bit of a stretch, but according to Italy's National Institute for Food and Nutrition, it is a powerful antioxidant (1). And a recent Harvard study found that dark chocolate improves blood flow to the brain and heart. It's also high in a compound called "cocoa phenols," which is responsible for lowering mild high blood pressure, a common ailment for the middle agers out there(2).

Big Sur Wedding

Came across this wedding at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, California. I've never been there, but it seems like a cool place. You can't really go wrong with lots of trees and a good book. All photos by Jessamyn Harris.

Centerpieces involving wine jugs, seedlings, and lemons.

The couple provided Barlow Brew, handmade beer packaged in bottles that had a picture of their dog, Barlow, on it! Too cute! And although not the most eco-friendly, favor cd's are always popular.

Wedding E-Zine

No matter how eco-friendly you are, it's next to impossible to go through your entire wedding planning without reaching for a glossy wedding magazine here and there. Fortunately, the internet has made bridal research easier, thereby reducing a potentially gigantic heap of wedding magazines on your living room floor to a mere two or three (and freeing up space in our recycling bins too). Utterly Engaged, a new wedding e-zine, indulges our electronic need for wedding inspiration. The layout is very user-friendly and they've got some great ideas and DIY tutorials! Check out these photos from their Wedding Style section!

Revisiting Vintage Pyrex

This was such a popular post from May 2008, I thought I would run it again. Enjoy!

Earthtones, the earth friendly etsy guide, had a great article on shopping green (see it here) not too long ago. In the buying used section, they feature the fabulous vintage pyrex of the Etsy shop, Thats Swell. (pictured top) I was awed by the array of colors - so much like a grandma's kitchen - and I found myself googling the words "vintage pyrex." To my surprise, there is a whole world out there of pyrex, which many people collect and proudly display. In my opinion, these would be a great thing to collect, in moderation of course, because you can actually use them too. Unlike salt and pepper shakers (which I went through a period of collecting once) they don't sit on a shelf and collect dust until that one time a year you decide to put them on the table.

I think with some creativity you could use these as very colorful decorations set around your wedding. Fill with water and flowers to match the color of the bowl itself. Or use third party registry sites, such as wishpot.com, to register for vintage stuff on Etsy and ebay.

Healthy Monday - Common Woes of the Modern Bride: Eating Right and Saving Money

With the exception of lunching at work or the occasional birthday outing, my husband and I have made a new resolution to eat all our meals at home for the next 30 days. To some, this is already an established practice, but for us this will be tough. The idea is that we'll not only save money, we'll be able to eat healthier, support our local grocers and farmer's markets, and cut down on transportation emissions.

With the exorbitant cost of weddings and the pressure to look good in all those wedding photos, it's common for most brides to also be extra aware of how much they're spending and what they're eating. But in order to save money and eat healthier, you don't have to take measures as drastic as mine. Most of the time it's simply a matter of being more prepared, which will in turn allow you to make better choices at your local grocer. For instance, plan a menu at the beginning of the week and compile a list of ingredients needed for each meal. This way you'll know exactly what you want, which will discourage mindless wandering down the aisles where you're more likely to pick up those 50 calories-a-cookie cookies or the fake cheese that squirts out of a can.

One other thing you can do is take advantage of the internet. Sites like allrecipes.com allow you to search for recipes with specific foods, create a list of favorite recipes, and it will even generate your shopping list for you. Many sites, such as Divine Caroline and Whole Living, also offer insightful and educational resources in regards to eating and staying healthy. I personally am a fan of the article, The 20 Healthiest Foods for Under $1.

Handmade Pottery and an Eco-Friendly Wedding Registry

When I was in college I took advanced ceramics. It was an awesome class and my teacher was a true hippy, but I failed to ever create anything as beautiful as these pieces from Dodge Station Pottery. I love their rustic, elegant feel. If I had a house on a prairie, I would get these to match my decor. But I don't have a prairie house, so I'll just keep dreaming. But for all you brides out there, they have set up a wedding and gift registry. The groom in your life may appreciate the not-so-feminine dinnerware.

Healthy Monday: Berry Friendly Fun

Fresh, ripe berries. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries. High in cancer blocking anti-oxidants, it's hard not to love these deliciously cool fruits in the middle of summer, when the sun is hot and the days are long. Summer is a berry yielding season, so they can easily be bought locally in many parts of the country, which is a sustainable plus. But beware, too many berries and not enough time to eat them often leads to a case of the overripe, moldy fruit blues. Don't despair! Start implementing berries into more of your recipes and enjoy them in a different way. Think blueberry muffins, salad with strawberries, or the more unusual chilled blueberry soup! WholeLiving.com has the scoop on 30 berry friendly recipes!

Eco-Friendly Bamboo Utensils

If you're a fan of sushi, like to camp, travel, or go on picnics, you really have no need to ever use wasteful plastic cutlery or one-time use chopsticks again! Yes, you can bring silverware from home, or try RePEaT Bamboo Utensils. Loving the colorful holders, which are made out of recycled pet plastic. If you've got an outdoor themed wedding, these would also work well as stuffers for the out of town gift bags.

Speaking of picnics, if you're planning one for the holiday weekend, check out 101 20 Minute Dishes for Inspired Picnics. This is great just for perusing and many of the dishes could be used as appetizers for those backyard rehearsal dinners.

Alright folks! We're taking a short break for July 4th, but we'll back on Monday. For my readers in the states, enjoy the holiday weekend!
